The Saint Who Preached to the Birds

RodXStaff · August 6, 2026

Eight hundred years ago, a poor man stepped off a road in Italy to preach a sermon, not to a crowd, but to a field full of birds.

This is the story of St. Francis of Assisi and his sermon to the birds: how he called them his little sisters, reminded them of all their Creator had given them (their freedom, their song, their food, the whole kingdom of the air), and blessed them before they rose and scattered to the four corners of the sky. It's one of the most beloved tales of the saint remembered as a friend to all creation.

"Ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you." (Job 12:7)

Told through classical paintings and narration, adapted from The Little Flowers of St. Francis (the Fioretti), c. 14th century.
